We believe that scholarly excellence requires more than methodological training. It demands intellectual community, sustained dialogue, and the confidence that comes from being taken seriously as a thinker.
The fellowship is not merely a research opportunity: it is a formative experience in the life of an emerging scholar. For three months, fellows are embedded in the institute's work, paired with a senior TDE partner (scholar or practitioner) who serves as a research advisor, dissertation consultant, and professional mentor. The relationship extends beyond methodology into academic writing, publication strategy, professional identity, and career trajectory. Each fellowship works towards a joint publication at the end of the fellowship period. Fellows participate in Institute seminars, Seasonal Dialogues, and other events, presenting their work in progress and engaging with a multidisciplinary community of academics and policymakers.

Open to PhD students at any stage whose research intersects with democratic theory, political corruption, forced migration, international aid, or the political psychology of citizenship. We welcome candidates who cross disciplinary boundaries and are not afraid of difficult questions. Fellows receive a monthly stipend for a three-month online residency with flexible scheduling, are paired with a dedicated senior TDE scholar who serves as research advisor and professional mentor throughout the fellowship and beyond, and participate fully in Institute activities — Seasonal Dialogues, seminars, and the Annual TDE Conference — gaining access to a working network of scholars and practitioners across four continents.
Applications for the 2027 cohort will open in June 2027. Candidates will be asked to submit:
— A current CV
— A research statement (2,000 words maximum) describing their doctoral project, its relevance to the Institute's lines of inquiry, and what they hope to gain from the fellowship
— A writing sample (published or unpublished, no more than 8,000 words)
— One letter of recommendation from their doctoral supervisor
— A brief statement (500 words) on why sustained dialogue between scholars and practitioners matters to their work
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a conversation with members of the Institute's Board of Directors.
